Garden Like a Ninja
March Madness
Make no mistake, a beautiful garden is a testament to the gardener's dedication and grit. Behind the stunning blooms and lush greenery lies the untold story of hours spent digging, planting, weeding, nurturing and dreaming!
A Garden Mirrors The Affection It Receives
Much like a coveted dinner invitation to that friend's house who creates a generous feast. My friend Sarah has a talent for elevating a simple dinner into a lavish feast. Her generous table resembles a Roman banquet, with plates and platters brimming with a friend's dedicated efforts and love. This parallel holds true for a garden. I like a garden to be a feast for the senses for all who have an invitation!
And now to the WORK!…
Ninja Time
March is Ninja time in the garden. It is time to roll up our sleeves, dig in, and get to work. Weeds are popping up everywhere like they have horns and teeth! The perennials from last year are begging to be cut down to the ground and let's not forget about all the frost-damaged leaves that need to go.
Eye Spy…Bare Spots
Black Holes in the Garden?
Winter is an ideal time to see where you might need to fill in a bare patch or two. An easy fix is to sprinkle a wildflower mix or perhaps some California poppy seeds in your garden beds that could use a little pick-me-up.
What else should we consider for our gardens?
Small Evergreens
My favorite green garden fillers:
Pittosporum ‘wheelers dwarf’
Hebe sutherlandii
Heather
Boxwood
Sword fern
Euphorbia
Fruit Tree’s Please!
Grow it!
In the old days of westward expansion, planting fruit trees was common for settlers. Fruit trees were a source of fresh produce for settlers and an investment in sustainable living. Sounds like it’s still a good idea!
No Room, No Problem
Espalier, Columnar, and Dwarf varieties are excellent choices for small urban gardens and work well in pots! No excuses - fruit trees can be a perfect fit!
Plant Pairing #6
Dwarf Golden Queen Peach
Look at this adorable dwarf peach tree! I Found this beauty last summer. By august it was covered in golden fruit. We made a scrumptious peach pie and smoothies for days!
I planted it in a large terracotta pot and added 3 white trailing Bacopa at the base of it. It sits proudly on my front porch and I'm excited about switching up the annual display. Perhaps I'll go for Superbells Peach this summer!
Calibrachoa Peach
Get Dirty,…. and give the love to your garden!
